One of the best things about getting to visit Chuck and Marylee on the farm was the unbelievable food. Grandmother is without a doubt the best cook I have ever known. Every meal was a major spread complete with all the trimmings. It wasn't that the food was fancy, it was just good basic southern home cooking. Now that I have a family of my own, I can really appreciate the skill and hard work it takes to bring all of that to the table at once. I really believe that part of reason that I find myself in the baking business today is that I was exposed to such great food out there on the farm.
From the black eyed peas to the fried yellow squash to the fried chicken with biscuits and gravy. The hot rolls, the fried potatoes, the red beans, the fried okra. What about the desserts. The cookies at Christmas time, the Italian cream cake and who could forget the Army cake! Another great memory is waking up on a cold winter morning to the smell of Marylee cooking breakfast. The smell of fried eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and black coffee all mingling together. The hot biscuits with butter and a big spoonful of plum jelly. I am very grateful to have been a participant in those wonderful meals that Marylee constructed on that red Formica table that sloped to the west. I am curious what were all of your favorites ?
